When he sent me the PDF, it opened and displayed fine in Preview on my Mac, running the same versions of macOS and Preview. Curious! Curious! Nothing I suggested made any difference, but after some more research, Chris reported back with the solution, which he found in a thread in the Apple Support Communities .
Be careful though, found this out: if you drop an image into a PDF it takes the page format of the page previous to the image. If you drop an image next to an 8.5×11” image, it’ll center the image onto a letter sheet instead of just a free flowing image.

26/11/2017 · Also, I rely on the built-in preview options within the Mac OS to quickly sort and find images. If I can’t rely on the integrity of the image, then that’s an issue. But the fact that the images only look bad in Photoshop, makes me think this HAS to be an Adobe problem.
